~Oh! Love Those Sixties Frills!~
In the sixties we see a more cutesy style hitting the luxury lingerie market!
From frilly knickers to baby dolls with puffy sleeves.
And what about that ’60s negligee, slips, nightgown sets, and peignoirs becoming brighter color-wise, and with added panache in the form of pleated fabric garnishes to gush over?
This was also in many ways a reflection of what was worn as outerwear;
A bitty child-like, with women wearing knickerbockers, pinafores, gymslips (formerly worn by schoolgirls), baby doll, Mod or GoGo dresses, and those higher hemlines with the likes of the miniskirt.
Also, the increased use of stretchy (lycra) fabrics and of course the iconic, usually colorful printed fabrics used in sixties fashion had a lot to do with the cute vibe of luxury lingerie beneath!
And with also colorful nylon being all the rage it was all happening seemingly effortless.
~What About That Baby Doll?~
A big hitter in the luxury lingerie realm certainly was the baby doll in the sixties!
Do you know where the word baby doll for this lingerie item comes from?
This rather cute lingerie item is named after a not so innocent 1956 movie called ‘Baby Doll‘.
This bit of luxury lingerie did pretend to be all virtuous and very youthful!
But with the use of those translucent fabrics and the frilly bits, it was certainly regarded as being a sexy must-have in the ’60s and onwards.
~Preferred Bra and panties of the Sixties~
The preferred bra shape was still a bit pointy like the cone bra/ bullet bra, but not as exaggerated as before.
A sixties bra still offered support and giving shape to the breasts was still a big thing.
But we went a bit more natural though with the bullet-bra type being less pointy than in the fifties!
In the luxury lingerie department, we also find an increase of colorful panties, with to start with a higher waistline, but towards the end of the sixties, the waistline dropped and merely hugged the hips.
Next to these panties, we find lycra-sublimity in a girdle-type long brief called pettipants!
~Hosiery ~
Okay, yes, to start with we would still see those girdles with the suspenders for a bit in the sixties!
But as fashion started to change more and more and hemlines started to rise we find that the need for stockings held up by suspenders decreased.
So, the need of having attached suspenders or wearing garter belts was now!Uhm!suspended!
Why would stockings be less of a thing you might wonder?
Well, in the sixties the pantyhose or tights were invented!
And we also managed to figure out that back-seams were not necessary as nylons could now be knitted around.
The invention of pantyhose/tights was an excellent development for the likes of miniskirt-wearing ladies out there!
They didn’t have to keep suspenders and those stockings in check to try and keep hiding them under those short hemlines!
